The Act named “Freedom of Information Act, 2011 was passed into Law by the National Assembly on the 27th Day of May, 2011, and was signed into Law by Dr. GoodLuck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of The Federal Republic of Nigeria on the 28th Day of May, 2011.
The essence of the passage of the Freedom of Information Act in consonance with the legal framework, is for citizen’s to have access to information held by public officers, authorities, and institutions in Nigeria. To mention a few are highlights of the core framework of the F.O.I Act:
- To provide for public access to public records and information;
- To establish procedures for the achievement of these purposes and for other related matters.
- To make public records and information more freely available;
- To protect public records and information to the extent consistent with the public interest and the protection of personal privacy;
- To protect serving public officers from adverse consequences for disclosing certain kinds of information without authorization;
