Survey Coordination Department is one of the six technical departments in the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation. The department has three divisions, these are coordination, monitoring and compliance and zonal offices.
The responsibilities of implementing one of the earliest Act passed into law immediately after independent (Survey Coordination Act of 1962 and its subsequent amendments) rest squarely on the department.
It is upon the mentioned three divisions that all activities of the department are executed. These activities include, receiving and issuance of notices and counter notices ,monitoring and ensuring compliance to the survey coordination Act and its amendments ,ensuring security of the country and non-duplication of survey work and creation of databank for geo-information data that are generated by MDA’s, oil industry and construction companies. The functions of the Department are as follows:
- Managing the pool of surveyors in the Federal Civil Service
- Production and updating of technical manuals, instructions and specification(s) for surveying and mapping projects
- Coordinating survey activities all over the country in line with the Survey Co-ordination Act of 1962 as amended
- Creating/updating the geospatial data bank for the Federal Government
- Monitoring all survey activities in the country in liaison with the States’ Surveyor General
- Coordinating the zonal offices of the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation.
